1955 Ford Thunderbird
The Ford T-Bird was and is one of the top most desirable American classic muscle cars. Of these very special cars, none really captures our attention quite as much as the original, the 1955. The first generation of the Ford Thunderbird is and was a two-seat convertible that was produced by Ford for the 1955 to 1957 model years. Only 1955, 1956, and 1957 were the years that countenanced the first generation. After 1957, Ford changed the T-Bird a bit, and so began the second generation.
What’s unique about the 1955 was that this was actually the first 2-seat Ford since way back in 1938. It came about rather suddenly too. The Ford T-Bird was developed in response to the Chevrolet Corvette, which also became quite popular at that same time. The Corvette itself was in turn developed in response to the ever-rising popularity of European sports cars among American residents. Essentially, American car manufacturing companies were realizing that sports car manufacturing was the place to be, and that this was a market that was currently being dominated by European car manufacturing companies.
What did this create? The incentive for Ford to create the revolutionary and evolutionary Ford T-Bird. Ford created a completely new sports car and called it the Thunderbird. Ford wanted a light weight car, a light weight car that was fast, and a light weight car that was fast and comfortable.
There were a lot of Ford T-Birds made in 1955, 1956, and 1957. And why not? They were immensely popular. A total of 53,166 units were produced for the three model years, giving many Americans a chance to have one.
The 1955 Ford T-Bird was not just all looks either. It was produced with either a Fordomatic automatic or manual overdrive transmissions, and the car featured impressive four-way powered seats and pushbutton interior door handles, something that was unique and new to that era. Other unique features were a telescoping steering wheel (also new) and a tachometer (not new but the T-Bird’s was quite nice).
All in all, the 1955 Ford T-Bird is a cherished and appreciated vehicle. Many have liked them for a long time, and many more will like them in the future as the car continues to earn recognition and fame.
