The 1969 Buick Stage Convertible was thought by many to be the hallmark of the 1960s Buicks. In fact, for years the Buick motor company had not stepped into the muscle or performance car category as other major auto manufacturers had. By the late 1960s, Buick was ready for its power play, and boy did they really deliver.
The 1969 Buick Stage Convertible is considered to be one of the most desirable and one of the rarest of the Buick performance vehicles from that era. Considered by many to be a marketing tactic, Buick had been holding back on releasing its first versions of muscle and performance cars for some time. True enough, Buick didn’t really shine in the performance area until the late 1960s.
1969 saw Buick absolutely challenge the muscle car market with its infamous GS Stage 1 model that featured a very impressive 400 cid motor that was a stroked and bored version of the better known and reliable 340 “Nailhead” motor as it was called. In typical Buick fashion, they did it their way with a unique motor and unique styling to really make it their own and keep their cars different from the competition.
The 1969 Buick Stage Convertible offered impressive options and satisfactory features that just weren’t found on other cars. For example, GS cars also received things like 400 signature chrome on the hood scoop and rear quarter, plus a deluxe steering wheel, foam padded seats, and a unique GS grill. And they didn’t stop there either. As if that wasn’t enough there was a Stage 1 option that raised the compression ratio to 11.0:1 that was rated at a full 345 HP and 440 lb-ft of torque, which at that time put this car on par with any other muscle or performance car on the market. All in all this is and was a very desirable car, and perhaps is even more desirable today.
