Before the start of a round, each player is dealt a hand. This is done by the dealer, who deals each of the cards to a single player. After the initial deal, the dealer shuffles and deals the cards to the other players in a clockwise pattern. The dealer’s last card, the jack, is typically the first card dealt.

When the bets are gathered in the pot, the highest ranking hand wins the pot. This can be accomplished by making a bet that no other player has matched. Depending on the game, the prize may be shared between all of the players, or the highest hand alone may be awarded.

Poker may be played with any number of players, but ideally, six to eight are needed. The amount of money that a player is allowed to bet varies, depending on the game, the rules of the particular poker version, and the location where it is being played. For example, fixed-limit games require a specific amount of money to be bet before the start of the game. However, pot-limit games can allow bets up to the total value of the pot. Similarly, stud poker limits the player’s betting amount to twice as much as the final betting interval.
