Video Games and Their Different Types
Games, also called hobbies, are collections of things people do for enjoyment or exercise. A game is typically a structured, repeated form of activity, usually undertaken for fun or entertainment, and occasionally used as an educational instrument. Most games are independent from work, which is usually done for remuneration; in most cases, games are undertaken as a way of relaxing, playing, or testing one’s skills. People typically play games that are relevant to their lives, such as games that help to build their motor skills, or games that teach them about different aspects of human interaction. In the past, video games were regularly used for this purpose.
There are several types of games, which fall into one or more of the genres described above. Role-playing video games, often abbreviated as RPGs, are generally narrative in nature, requiring the player to take on the role of a character within an interactive storyline. Action and adventure games, commonly shortened to RPGs, are played in a third-person perspective, as the player assumes the role of a protagonist within an interactive storyline. Racing games, like many video game titles, are often played in first-person perspective, with the player taking control of an automobile. These games normally require the player to maneuver the vehicle, while fighting opponents and completing various challenges.
Real-time strategy games, or RTS games, are multiplayer online role-playing games. In these games, players must fight against computer-simulated characters using real-time strategies. In turn-based strategy games, players must accumulate resources and create buildings to increase their capability to fight against their computer-simulated enemies. The player may use weapons, equipment, and vehicles to fight against their opponents. Some of these game titles are turn-based, requiring players to wait for specific turns before they can engage in combat. Others are first-person shooters, which are very similar to first-person shooter games.
Strategy board games give players the opportunity to engage in intense real-time competitive play. Most of these board games have been simplified to provide a great deal of depth in their mechanics. Although most of these games are multiplayer games, some games give players the ability to play against each other directly using a computer. Some of these board games require players to build real-world properties such as real estate, farms, etc. Others simulate war, negotiations, conflicts, etc.
Computer Role Playing Games (CRPGs) are highly competitive games played on computers. They are the most popular genre of computer role-playing games. In these games, players use a high degree of cognitive skill to interact with others through a variety of narrative scenarios. CRPGs often contain a “campaign” or story line that players follow, advancing the story based on their actions. These games often use turn-based gameplay. In turn-based CRPGs, players spend a certain amount of time performing some action, then perform an action that causes them to gain experience points.
Video games provide people with the ability to escape into another world where they can feel as though they have the power to shape the world around them. All video games have a unique type of game mechanics, a special set of rules and application. Some games have more complex systems requiring many different types of rules to be followed. Some video games are designed to make the player feel like they are a part of an interactive fiction. All video games have had a significant impact on the way people communicate, play and have fun.
