Game Designers is individuals who create the computer games that we all enjoy playing. A game is often a structured kind of play, often undertaken simply for fun or entertainment, and at times used as an educational instrument. Games are quite different from work, which typically are carried out primarily for monetary remuneration, and in comparison to art, which can be more abstract and representational in nature. Game Designers must therefore have a broad understanding of many different disciplines, including mathematics, computer technology, graphics design, logic, programming, as well as aesthetics.

GAMES

A graphic designer will use specialized software to design the characters, environments and mechanics of games. The level of interactivity within these games is dependent on how well the Designers understand the requirements of the players. For instance, a driving game might require that the player to drive their vehicle at certain speeds, making sharp turns and avoiding obstacles on the way. A Designer must therefore master not only the technical side of game design but also the creative side, as it is this latter which will ultimately sell the games and attract the audiences that it is trying to reach.

In the current competitive market, many designers are choosing to go the freelancing route. By doing so they can work from home and control their own creative output. This is a good option for a new Designer as it enables them to learn as much about different areas as possible, whilst gaining experience and clients through referrals. However, freelancing is not the only choice available and many more professionals are choosing to develop their skills in the different areas of the design industry. In fact, those who are experienced in one area are often willing to develop their skills into the next, often leading to an increased demand for their services.

A Gamedev is an individual who works in the game design industry. Whilst being a full-time employee of a game developer company may be advantageous for those looking for a steady rise through the ranks, there are other options available to them. If an individual wishes to progress within the industry then, an internship may be the best way to achieve this. Internships can sometimes lead to full-time positions, or a move to another part of the business. There are also grants and scholarships available to those wishing to further their education. Whether these are genuine opportunities or just a ploy by companies to prevent losing talent, is debatable.

Those with great skill in Gamedev and graphic design are likely to be offered a position at a larger company, as well as private projects. The nature of the work involved in Gamedev and design can vary considerably and the methods used in different sectors will differ as well. For instance, a character artist may create characters and environments, as well as providing animation. A Game Designer will create the code that drives the game – the systems and algorithms that create the real-life feeling and interaction of the game. A programmer will write the code that runs the game, as well as maintain and troubleshoot the various systems and code to ensure that everything is working correctly. In some cases, these three positions may be combined to form a more specialist position.

With experience, a Gamedev career can be an exciting one. Positions can range from project managers to designers to programmers, depending on the type of game being produced. It’s not only about having the skills, but having the interest in the industry, as well as the willingness to persevere and learn new things along the way.
